He breathed his last around 1:20 AM at the age of 81, in his official residence King Kothi Palace, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, (now in Telangana) India. . 56 years ago, a sea of people turned up for the death of Hyderabad’s last Nizam. More than a Million people came to pay their last tributes to their beloved former ruler(Raj pramukh) from all over the state. It was one of the biggest non religious, non political gatherings in d history of HYD. Born on April 6, 1886, Osman Ali Khan ruled the princely State of Hyderabad, from 1911 to 1948. Considered as one of the wealthiest rulers in the world during his reign, he is widely given credit for several projects, which have now become a symbolic part of HYD. He was known as the “Architect of modern Hyderabad” and is credited with establishing many public institutions in the city of Hyderabad, including among others: Osmania University, Osmania General Hospital, State Bank of Hyderabad,Begumpet Airport, and the Hyderabad High Court. Two reservoirs, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, were built during his reign, to prevent another great flood in the city. He worked for the betterment of the people and development of his State(Hyderabad State). On the last Nizam’s demise, the then Andhra Pradesh government remembered him by issuing an extraordinary gazette. The government declared state mourning on February 25, 1967, the day when he was buried. State government offices remained closed as a mark of respect while the national flag was flown at half-mast on all government buildings throughout the state. The Nizam’s grave is presently located at the “Masjid-e-Judi” opposite King Kothi Palace, which was his residence.
